While going through an adoption, the adoptive parents often go through a
number of concerns. And the same applies to the birth parents. When putting a
child up for adoption, the biggest concern is, how can be the life of adopted
children. Obviously, it is with the very intention that they are taking such a
mammoth decision. But that doesn’t curb the concerns at all. The cultural
values, the education the child will receive, the bondage is some important
concerns of life of adopted children.
Let us dig a little deeper and try to find out about the life of adopted children. Can they truly live a happy life or not.
Studies show that
most adoption works fine for both families and more importantly for the child
if adopted at a young age. Babies less than a year old might not be emotionally
mature enough. But they can sense and miss the smell, sight or voice of their
birth parents which mostly goes away within a few weeks. The adoptive parents
shower extra care and affection to make the child comfortable. These
children tend to develop sound habits of reading, performing arts or any other
extra curriculum. An adopted child was most likely put up because of his birth
parent’s financial condition. Under such circumstances, these children do get a
better education, healthcare and other little provisions which they otherwise
wouldn’t.
The child’s
upbringing
Similarly, another important aspect and probably a crucial one in a
child’s upbringing is the dilemma to maintain contact with the birth parents.
Both parents think it is better for the child to not be in constant
communication with the birth parents. While in some cases adoptive parents
encourage the children to communicate with their biological parents. Although
it is not strictly necessary, but when adopted children are not kept away from
their actual parents, they seem to lead a happier content life and cope with
grief and abandonment issues better. At some point, it is absolutely necessary
they know the details about their adoption. In such circumstances, the
availability to communicate with their biological parents acts as a boon.
Initial days of
adoption
Often termed as open or semi-open adoption, these adoption cases turn
out to be more successful with access to their birth parents. Family history,
genealogy and even their medical history details are available. Being
able to communicate with their biological parents helps the adopted children in
accepting the adoption. They come to terms with it without having to
suffer from any kind of abandonment issues which is quite common. Moreover,
they have a touchstone to relate where their physical characteristics or traits
came from. It prevents any kind of identity issues in their adolescent
phase. The openness and encouragement of adoptive parents inculcate a positive
feeling towards their birth mother. At the same time, these children
accept and bond better with their adoptive parents.
It all breaks down to how secure and comfortable the child is while
growing up. As long as a child has a healthy identity development, he will face
lesser issues. Life of adopted children can be truly happy and
successful.
But there are certain things that you can never expect
from your adopted child. Also revealing about
adoption to your child is a sensitive issue.
