Life is never devoid of problems. Some are subtle, while some are so
major that they test out mettle and mental strength. Irrespective of how big or
small a problem is and whether the solution to it is easy or not, we all tend
to think. And in the process of thinking, we end up overthinking. We all know
that overthinking is not quite the solution to any of our problems. Even then,
we at times tend to lose control and stress out. We have to stop overthinking
to come out with amicable solutions for our problems.
Here are six simple ways to stop overthinking.
1. Accept it
The best way to
curb overthinking is to accept the fact that you are unnecessarily overthinking
about something. And that will not lead to a viable solution to your
issues. Thinking too much about the near or long-term future, being too anxious
about most of your major or minor decisions, increasingly negative thoughts
dominating your mind barring you from being happy – all of these are signs that
you are overthinking too much and really need to stop, relax and unwind. Let
your near and dear ones be the honest judge here. Take their opinion
about your behavioral changes because they can see these subtle changes even if
you can’t. Blatantly denying the fact that you are overthinking will not lead
to an insight and clarity. Acceptance, on the contrary, might.
2. Think less, Breathe more
It all starts with
your casual thoughts about something that you are concerned about in the
past. About something you are worried about in the future, a decision you
have to take. Or even a responsibility you have to fulfill or a plan you have
to make can be a trigger. The downhill road from here to overthinking is quick.
Before you realize you might have spun a web of insecurities and anxiety all
around you. Don’t think about things to start with. Try to keep your mind clear
and rely on your actions. Plan things and be organized, but also remember to
take deep breaths often.
3. Meditate
Spiritual practice in
your daily routine can be a great way to unwind, relax and calm your mind completely.
Generally, people are finding solace in meditation/ yoga in order to attain a
much calm and composed approach towards life. Make it a habit of taking some
time off every day to practice meditation. Even if it is for 10-15 minutes.
This will help you curb out negativity and get a more positive vibe about
yourself.
4. Get busy
Distractions are an
extremely effective way to keep away negative thoughts and your overthinking
tendencies. If you can keep yourself busy with some or the other activities,
mostly things that can keep you happily engaged, it will help you eradicate
negative thoughts. Listen to soothing music, going for long walks, playing
games or learning something new. Anything and everything works as long as you
are keeping your mind productively busy with something else.
5. Physical activity
Being actively
involved in sports or any kind of physical activity will not only keep you fit
and healthy but will also keep you fit and refreshed mentally. It will help to
keep you away from overthinking and proper physical activity will also tire you
out at the end of the day which will force you to block out negative thoughts
and relax.
6. Perfection is a myth
Above all, remember
that no-one is perfect and everyone deals with their share of problems in life.
Overthinking will not help you reach any concrete results but instead pull you
back from doing the best you can and stops you from being successful in
life.
You will never be free until you free yourself from the prison of your
own false thoughts. So stop overthinking and find inner peace.
