A
few days ago, I attended an interesting session on Body-Mind and Soul-Experiencing
happiness in our heart. The session termed as ‘Fusion of Spirituality
and Cardiac Knowledge’ undoubtedly drew my attention and more than everything else,
it was a life time experience to hear the talks of the stalwarts, Padmabhushan Dr Devi Prasad Shetty, renowned
Cardiologist and Director of Narayana Hridayalaya and Padma Vibhushan, Dr Virendra
Hegde, Dharmadhikari of Shree Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Sansthan.
Dr.
Devi Shetty briefed on healthy eating and drinking habits. I hung on to every word as he spouted in his
short speech of less than ten minutes.
I
wish to share with you the little pieces of my take-away from the evening.
Thumb
rules for a layman to take care of his heart are:
· Diet
: Less of carbohydrate, less of oil (all oils are bad), more of green
vegetables, fruits and salads, avoid junk food
· Exercise:
Half an hour walk. Walking is preferred
than jogging as jogging leads to early fatigue and injury to joints.
·
Quit
smoking & alcohol.
·
Control
weight
·
Control
BP
·
Routine
health check-ups past the age of 30.
Finally
the forum was opened to questions from the attendees and the quick answers
followed.
1.
How
would you defined junk food ?
Ans: Fried food, McDonalds,
Samosas and even Masala Dosas.
2.
What
are the ways to distress?
Ans: Change your attitude
towards life, do not look for perfection.
3.
Many of us have an irregular daily routine and
many a times we have to stay late nights in office. Especially those who come in shifts. What
precautions would you recommend?
Ans: When you are young, nature
protects you against all these irregularities.
However, as you grow older, respect the biological clock.
4.
Will
consuming more coffee/tea lead to heart attacks?
Ans: No.
5. Sometimes,
due to the hectic schedule we are not able to exercise. So, does walking while
doing daily chores at home or climbing the stairs work as a substitute for
exercise?
Ans: Certainly. Avoid sitting
continuously for more than half an hour and even the act of getting out of the
chair and going to another chair and sitting helps a lot.
Quite
obviously, the subject was meant to enlighten the residents of the township. But it
all boils down to one question, how much time can one afford to spend on
himself ?
